Next Plus is developing next-generation AI drone systems that combine autonomy, communications, hardware, and intelligent control. We are building a team of motivated students and early-career researchers to help prototype, simulate, and test advanced drone technologies.

Role Description

We are seeking part-time Research Assistants to join our team for a 6-month project. This is a  paid position (~$1,000/month stipend) , hybrid in San Jose, CA with flexibility for remote work.

Depending on background and interest, selected candidates may work in one or more of the following areas:

• AI/ML and Software Development → Algorithms, autonomy, and decision-making systems
• Simulation and Modeling → Drone environments, physics models, and performance testing
• Communications and Networking → Wireless, mesh, and secure data links for drones
• Cybersecurity → Security tools, encryption, and data protection methods
• Systems Integration → Bringing together hardware, software, and interfaces
• UI/UX Design → Operator dashboards and control systems
• Hardware and Testbed Support → Small drone hardware, sensors, electronics, and flight test prep
• Documentation and Reporting → Reports, visuals, and research deliverables

Qualifications

• Pursuing or completed coursework in  Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Mechanical/Aerospace Engineering, Cybersecurity, Robotics, or related fields
• Interest or experience in drones, robotics, or AI systems
• Strong analytical, research, and communication skills
• Ability to work independently and in a collaborative environment

Requirements

• Must be 18 years or older
• Must be a U.S. Citizen
• Must be eligible to obtain a security clearance if required
• Bay Area students preferred (priority for local candidates for lab-based testing)

Compensation and Commitment

• Stipend: ~$1,000/month ($6,000 total for 6 months)
• Part-time: ~10–15 hrs/week
• Duration: 6 months
